The Art of Articulation: Distance Training

Develop control, accuracy, and awareness at the point where articulation really happens.

Distance Training is a focused articulation study I come back to intermittently in my own practice. However, I have found it an excellent way of assisting students to refine their articulation. Rather than concentrating on speed or repeated attacks, this exercise slows the process right down, helping you become deeply aware of how the tongue moves, where it contacts the reed, and how that contact affects the sound.

I think I’ve said this many times already but articulation is one of the most challenging aspects of clarinet playing because it’s a technique we can’t see. So, I hope this little exercises helps you gain a clearer understanding of how articulation should feel, guided by careful listening to how it sounds. By sustaining the tone while gently placing and releasing the tongue, you learn to achieve clean, precise articulation without percussive attack or unnecessary tension.

This resource focuses on:

  • Developing accurate, efficient tongue contact on the reed

  • Improving control and consistency of articulation

  • Building awareness of articulation through sound and sensation

  • Maintaining tonal stability across registers

Includes:
• Printable PDF
• A focused articulation awareness study
• Clear, concise performance guidance
• Suitable for intermediate to advanced clarinettists
